Malibu has more event rules than most of the cities we serve. Knowing them early keeps your date safe.
Big private parties may need a city permit. In residential zones, Malibu requires a Special Event Permit for any event of 100 or more guests, or any event with a commercial side, such as a house rented for the party.
Rentals in city parks need a permit. Bringing rented tables, chairs, or other paid vendors onto city property such as Malibu Bluffs Park requires a permit, so send us your date and we will give you our details for the application.
Bluffs Park has strict setup rules. Canopies must be held down with sandbags, concrete bases, or stakes no longer than 8 inches, canopies over 200 square feet need a fire permit, and balloons and plastic confetti are not allowed. Events over 150 guests also need a Temporary Use Permit. If your plan includes one of our fabric structures and cabanas, let us know so it is anchored to meet those rules.
Fall brings fire weather. Red Flag days mean low humidity and strong Santa Ana gusts. On those days, anything that can catch the wind, like draping and lightweight decor, needs to be weighted down or left out.
